Case Studies
On Port PCC
The initial concept of the Primary Consolidation Centre (PCC) project was to provide suppliers with an alternative supply chain route into our customer that would improve consumer availability, reduce stock holding and also reduce costs.
In most cases the existing suppliers were delivering less than full loads once or twice a week to RDC's. This resulted in high transport costs for smaller suppliers.
PCC Network
- PCC's were strategically positioned with a 30 miles radius of key supplier bases
- One or two main suppliers were recruited into each PCC to gain the critical mass required to support smaller suppliers
- All products in PCC remained under the ownership of the supplier, but visible to the customer through their management system
- The customer provided the PCC facility for suppliers through 3rd party operators
- The customer held all negotiations and agreements with suppliers
BAP has operated a Primary consolidation centre for Sainsbury's since 1995, predominantly handling imported canned and packet foods.
Based at Felixstowe, BAP controls products for over 20 suppliers in a dedicated racked and bulk warehouse that is linked to Sainsbury's systems.
This is an attractive cost effective route for import suppliers into the Sainsbury's network.
